She slid onto the bench opposite me and I knew immediately she was the kind of woman who said whatever she thought, whenever she felt like it.
Silver hair, slicked flat from the heat. Swimsuit that had seen better decades. The look of someone who had long since stopped caring what you thought of any of it.
She didn't bother with the usual nod-and-settle routine. Just fixed me with this sharp, unblinking look and said:
“The problem with marriage is everyone thinks it's about love. It's not. It's about tolerance. And sex. But mostly tolerance.”
I barked out a laugh. Too loud. Too sudden. The kind that bounces off cedar walls.
Her face didn't move.
The thing about the heat.
We sat in the hiss and drip of the room, my skin prickling from more than the heat. Then she added, almost like she was finishing a sentence I hadn't heard the start of:
“Don't waste your time chasing perfect. Just find someone you can tolerate in the heat.”
She stood, adjusted her swimsuit in a way that didn't help, and left.
Door closed. Steam rushed in to fill her place.
Still turning it over.
I sat there, ribs still aching from that first laugh, sweat sliding down my spine like punctuation. I turned it over in my head for the rest of the session. I'm still turning it over.
The sauna strips people back. Clothes, jewellery, pretence, the whole performance of being a person out in the world. You can't really maintain much when you're poaching in your own juices. And what's left, when all that's gone, is usually worth listening to.
The only advice that landed.
But she handed me the only relationship advice I've heard in years that actually landed.
Don't chase perfect.
Find someone you can tolerate in the heat. Laugh with them. And if they'll wear a sauna hat without complaint — keep them.
